Barcelona in Black and White

by Craig Lassig

Barcelona is Spain's second largest city, with a population of nearly two million people. The city, located directly on the northeastern Mediterranean coast of Spain, has a rich history dating back at least 2,000 years when it gained prominence as a Roman town under its old name, Barcino. It's a wacky mixture of old, new, and futuristic with the look of the Gaudi architecture.

One of many human statues in Barcelona performs in the square before the gothic-style Catedral de la Santa Creu, begun in the 13th century but finished in the 19th. Roman, Romanesque, gothic and medievel styles of architecture lie within Barcelona's old city, and gems of art nouveau stud newer neighborhoods nearby.

Men play bocce ball in Parc de la Ciutadella, the vast Barcelona city park that once was the site a much-hated citadel.

The 14th century Santa Maria del Mar church has a grand presence, framed by the narrow streets of the Ribera section of Barcelona. Locals outnumber tourists at Mass in the gem of Catalan gothic style.

Modernist chimneys on the rooftop of Casa Mila, a Barcelona apartment building designed by Gaudi, combine form and function. They're known to work quite effectively.

barc4

Locals and tourists alike populate the late night streets of Barcelona. Here, a street musician performs in the Barri Gotic, Barcelona's gothic quarter.

bar5

Modernisme designer and beloved native son Antoni Gaudi died before completing the massive Barcelona landmark La Sagrada Familia. The church still stands unfinished, though work continues.

barc6

Barcelona's 1.5 million people are wedged between mountains and the Mediterranean Sea.

bar8

The Mediterranean Sea and its wide beach is just a kilometer's walk from Barcelona's main central plaza.
